THE IMAGE OF CHRIST THE KING
The image of Christ the King was gifted by Carmen Miranda of Vettucaud in memory of the priestly ordination of his son Fr.C.M.Hillary in the year 1942. The image was blessed and installed by the then Bishop of Cochin, Rt.Rev.Jose Viera Alvernez. From the very day of the installation, believers began to have visions and experiences of the Divine presence. Fishing folk returning with empty nets from the sea were blessed with heavy catch. Many people who were mentally and physically afflicted were cured of their ailments.
As days passed on, the number of devout pilgrims visiting the Shrine of Christ the King increased. The fame of Vettucaud spread gradually. These amazing witnesses signaled the never- ending flow of pilgrim to Vettucaud. The learned and the ignorant, the rich and the poor, men of all creeds and faith come to this holy land to unburden their sins, making it a visible witness of oneness of mankind.
The numerous poor who came to Vettucaud on foot from afar, returned to their homes, singing from door to door the glories and favours of Christ the King. These poor singers of Jesus’ praise also helped in their own humble way in spreading the miraculous events that took place in Vettucaud.
Worship at the feet of Christ the King on every Friday is attended by many believers. The Feast of Christ the King is celebrated on the last Sunday of Liturgical year. The crowds thronging to Vettucaud on the day has prompted the Government to declare it a public holiday.
